Best Homemade horse treats & Recipes
This easy recipe will allow you to make homemade horse treats for your horses! It takes only 7 ingredients and takes about 20 minutes to make! It is easy, inexpensive, and safe for kids!
As a teenager, my parents tried to convince me that I needed a horse. I didn’t know how major I was about agriculture at the time so they gave me a half-hearted offer.
They suggested that I could fence an area and create a shelter for horses, so they would be open to purchasing an equine companion.
They were concerned about me because it was winter, but I persevered and the shelter and fence became a reality.
To make a long story short, I purchased my first horse, Oreo, and have continued to grow my love of animals each year.
My four children have a strong bond with Ginger, their pony. Ginger was born to a fantastic family from the other side. This family was in the same barn that my husband rode when he a young horse.
Background about Horses
Because their children outgrew her, they were searching for a home for this sweet girl. We were searching for a horse and the mother was aware that we had children so she gave her to me! We are so grateful for her kindness!
After my husband became jealous of the children’s pony, we purchased our second horse, a Tennessee walking Horse/Percheron mix named Pearl. We also purchased Bailey shortly thereafter.
Ginger, Pearl and Bailey are outgoing and loveable. They delight in long walks along the pond and have a huge sweet tooth.
We bring them special treats on hot summer days. They love it! So I made homemade horse treats rather than purchasing them at the store.
How To Make best Homemade horse Treats
Homemade horse treats Directions:
STEP 1
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.
STEP 2
Grease a cookie sheet to keep the treats from sticking OR line the cookie sheet with a piece of parchment paper instead of using grease if you prefer.
STEP 3
Finely chop or grate 2 large carrots and 1 apple into small pieces. A food processor works great for this if you have one, but a blender works just fine. If you don’t have either, you can use a knife to cut them up as small as you can.
STEP 4
Mix the oats and the flour together in a large mixing bowl until they are combined well.
STEP 5
Now you can stir in the applesauce and ¼ cup of molasses into the oat mixture. combine these ingredients well using a wooden spoon or a stand mixer.
STEP 6
Roll the treat mixture into small balls (or whatever size you want to give to your horses). If they are too crumbly, add a little much more honey. If they are too sticky, add much more oats and/or flour.
STEP 7
Place the uncooked horse treats onto the greased or lined baking pan and bake at 350 F for 15 minutes.
Remove the treats with a spatula and place them in a container for storage. use a spatula even if you correctly greased or lined your pan. in some cases the bottoms stick just a little and a spatula will keep them from pulling apart.
STEP 8
Let your horses delight in as an occasional treat!
How to store horse Treats?
These treats are best stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. The cool temperature in the fridge slows the growth of mold so the treats last longer.
I don’t recommend storing them longer than a week so if you won’t be able to use the full amount that this horse treat recipe makes within a week, just cut the ingredient measurements in half.

What difference will Elite equine organic Rosehip powder make?
As an added reward to your horse’s treats, our organic rosehip powder will lend it a lovely, tangy taste that horses love.
However, to access the full benefit of rosehip’s powerful anti-inflammatory action and the antioxidants your ponies may need, it is recommended to supplement with their food daily.
Dosage is based on your horse’s weight. We recommend a loading month during which the dosage is 10g per 100kg horse weight.
For example: If you horse weighs about 500kg, this will imply 10g x 5 = 50g, or 2 scoops of our Elite Equine.
For the maintenance dose, you only have to supplement with 5g per 100kg horse weight, so that worksout to 5g x 5 = 25g, or 1 scoop of our Elite Equine.
On the maintenance dose for a 500kg horse, 1kg of Elite equine will then last about 40 days which works out to £0.95 per day.
